The root words on which this book leans, briefly explained.

Goël (Hebrew) — the redeemer; the nearest blood relative who is obligated to step in: to buy back the inheritance, to avenge the blood, to carry on the name.

Geulah — the redemption/buying-back; the ransom that the goël pays.

Go'el ha-dam — the "redeemer of blood," the avenger of blood.

Anti-goël — in this book: the counterfeit redeemer, the mirror and inversion of the true Goël.

Higbir (Daniel 9:27) — "to make strong with overwhelming power"; the prince makes an existing covenant strong, for the many, and gains the upper hand by it; he does not invent it. The only other hifil is Psalm 12:4 (the arrogant: "who is lord over us?").

Tamid — the daily morning and evening sacrifice in the temple.

Naos (Greek) — the innermost sanctuary, the holy place itself (2 Thessalonians 2:4) — not necessarily an entire temple complex.

Adonai-Jireh (Genesis 22:14) — "the LORD will provide"; the name Abraham gave to Mount Moriah.

Abaddon / Apollyon (Revelation 9:11) — "the Destroyer," the king of the abyss.

Apōleia (Greek) — "destruction, ruin"; the beast goes "eis apōleian" (17:8,11), and the antichrist is called "the son of destruction" (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

Tawhid (Arabic) — the absolute, indivisible oneness of God in Islam.

Shirk — the sin of "association": ascribing to God an equal or a son.

Hijra — the migration/exodus for the sake of the faith.

Da'wa — the "call"; the invitation/mission to join the Islamic community.

Ummah — the worldwide community of Muslims.

Hudna, jizya, shahada, ghayba, Mahdi, Isa, Dajjal — see Appendix B.
